Othello...

Other than the pathetic attempts of enacting scenes of Othello in English class, the Othello play I watched last night at Greenwich Theatre was the only proper production of Othello I have ever seen, which was terrible, probably the worst production of Othello there is. There were some good parts like how I cannot deny how passionate the actors and actress were. The emotions they portrayed were so real even if a little scary or over the top. This theatre decided to change up the play also by making Othello white and everyone black and set the story in the Caribbean instead of Cyprus. Now lets go into the bad parts that made Jhonelle keep repeating, " I'm so glad I didn't pay for this!" First of all when I said at the top that I went to a production... yeah, not a good choice of wording, amateur portrayal of Othello to do in a few peoples spare time would define it much better. So yeah we were a few minutes late because we had to take public transport all the way to the other side of London, on the outskirts pratically, and the ushers were quite rude about it. We hastily took our seats in a crowded theatre to look infront at the stage at what looks like a few scraps of rubbish collected to try and look like a boat? Let me get this straight, in Othello the boat scene was like for a page, literally, in their version their on the boat the whole time. I was seriously confused and even more confused to why Jhonelle next to me tried to find where they were at in our text book in the pitch black with her glasses on. She found the page which was absolutely useless because we had to watch the play, not read from the book, they weren't even following the storyline right because the set was such a disaster and there was only a cast of three. Three characters were presented in this, the director axed praticalley everyone, even Cassio who by the way is the person being set up for have an affair with Othello's wife!!!! So yeah a real dissapointment and to leave the theatre to find out we have to do an essay on the play which would be our first offcial course work piece and that we had to take notes which I wasn't informed with. Oh and then of course we had to make a trek all the way back which consisted of taking the DLR then 2 under grounds than a bus home at 10:00 at night, yeah.
